Bodyworks Swim Lessons
Learning to swim is a life-saving skill! Bodyworks is proud to offer Red Cross swim lessons for all ages.

Waterbabies / Advanced Waterbabies

This is the beginning level class for non-swimmers. The focus of the classis on water adjustment and basic stroke skills.

Minnows

Minnow Prerequisites

  • Comfortable in water
  • Enter and exit water safely
  • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
  • Blow bubbles through mouth and nose, independently
  • Open eyes underwater and pick up a submerged object held at arms length
  • Comfort in maintaining a front and back float position, and recover to a standing position with support
  • Roll over from front to back, and back to front with support
  • Change direction of travel while walking or paddling
  • Explore arm and hand movements for treading water with support
  • Swimming on front and back with support with alternating & simultaneous arm and leg action
  • Swimming on front and back with support with combined stroke, using any type of arm and leg action
  • Know how to get help in an emergency

Starfish

Starfish Prerequisites

In order to enroll in Starfish Swim Lessons, swimmer must be able to:

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side, and exit water safely using ladder or side
  • Submerge entire head, blow bubbles, submerging head in a rhythmic pattern (bobs)
  • Open eyes underwater and pick up submerged object
  • Show comfort maintaining a front (w/ face in water) and back float, and recover to a standing position
  • Front and back glide
  • Be able to do a jellyfish float
  • Roll over from front to back, and back to front
  • Change direction of travel paddling on front or backTread water using arm and leg motions
  • Swim on front at least 15 feet unsupported
  • Swim on back at least 10 feet unsupported using finning arm action
  • Swim on back at least 10 feet unsupported using sculling arm action
  • Swim on back at least 15 feet unsupported
  • Swim on side using alternating and simultaneous leg action with support for at least 5 feet
  • Demonstrate how to move in the water wearing a life jacket
  • Know how to get help in an emergency

Dolphins

Prerequisites For Dolphin Classes

  • Jump into deep water from the side
  • Submerge and retrieve an object
  • Bobs with head fully submerged
  • Rotary breathing with the body in a horizontal position
  • Front glide using two different kicks
  • Survival float
  • Back glide using two different kicks
  • Back float
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back
  • Tread water for 30 seconds
  • Front crawl for 15 yards
  • Butterfly (kick & body motion) for 15 feet
  • Back crawl for 15 yards
  • Enter the water using a ladder, steps, or side while wearing a life jacket
  • Demonstrate huddle and help positions for at least 1 minute
  • Demonstrate reaching assist

Sharks

Prerequisites For Shark Classes

  • Swim underwater (no hyperventilation)
  • Feet-first surface dive
  • Survival float for at least 1 minute
  • Back float for at least 1 minute
  • Open turn using any stroke on front and back and push off in streamlined position
  • Tread water using modified scissors, breaststroke or rotary kick and sculling arm motions for at least 1 min
  • Front crawl for 25 yards
  • Breaststroke for 15 yards
  • Butterfly for 15 yards
  • Back crawl for 25 yards
  • Elementary backstroke for 15 yards
  • Swim on side with scissors kick for 15 yards, with or without support
  • Demonstrate compact jump into 5 feet of water from a height while wearing a life jacket
  • Demonstrate a throwing assist
  • Demonstrate how to care for a conscious choking victim
